- Can be chosen as one of 3 or 4 H2 subjects on offer at JC level.
- For students who choose to take H2 History, it is vital to score well to ensure a good rank point as this is one of their core subjects that carry the highest weightage.
- H2 History has much more content than H1 and also differs in content - some topics studied by H1 students are replaced by others in H2.
- Students are often overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content there is to study. This includes students who took Pure History and excelled in it in Secondary School. The content needed almost increases by threefold and the learning curve from Secondary School to JC History is very steep.
- JC History students often attempt to cram content for the history paper. This is inefficient, stressful, time-consuming, and often leads to rigidity in answering the question since they are unable to adapt what they have memorised to the different writing frameworks needed to answer the question in the paper.
- H2 History Structured Essay Questions (SEQ) require the student to construct and unpack arguments in a deeper and more analytical way than in Secondary School. Secondary School History only requires students to either explain or weigh 2 or more given factors in an essay question. In JC, students will be expected to weave 4 or more factors into a coherent argument and demonstrate how each one supports or challenges a given stand (thesis). The way they must write is very challenging not only because they are unfamiliar with it but also because it requires them to have much higher sensitivity to phrasing and perspectives. On top of that, they must also know the vast amount of content very well AND be able to finish writing everything within the given time.
- The Source Based Questions (SBQ) will be tougher. In Secondary School, in several cases students are able to get away with using only the source material to answer SBQ questions even without applying any contextual content knowledge. In JC, every SBQ question will require the student to show deep understanding of the content and coherent explanation of it in a way that answers the question.
- Parents are generally unfamiliar with the way history is taught and also do not know the most efficient method to study history, often leading to well-intentioned parents forcing their child through more laborious and less effective methods of studying this subject such as heart-memorisation. This is damaging because it usually leads to rigidity in thinking based on stagnant repetition of content, whereas constructing good answers requires the student to be highly flexible in thinking, being able to reframe content according to the requirements of the question.
- Students of H2 History usually find it very difficult to manage their time during the paper. They usually write unnecessarily long answers which is counterproductive since this takes away time from attempting other questions.
- Stamina in the exam is a common problem amongst H2 History students. There are 2 Papers and each one is 3 hours long. This wears students out as seen in how their writing gets progressively less coherent towards the end of the paper as well as how many struggle to finish the paper.
- Because H2 History is considered one of the subjects that is a choice to take instead of being made compulsory, the phrasing of the exam questions will be considerably more tricky than H1 History and students will be expected to have greater sensitivity and skill in answering such curveballs.
- We will teach with a focus on developing exam technique and building stamina in a way that allows them to write analytically without getting tired and losing focus for the whole exam.
- We will focus aggressively on writing skills including how to unpack a question to avoid being misled by tricky phrasing, how to show how different factors relate to one another and show how to turn an essay into a cohesive discussion instead of a rambling wall of text.
- We will train them to make their answers shorter while still hitting all the key points the question requires so as to be able to finish the whole paper with every question answered well.
- We teach time-management techniques for studying itself: Under us students will learn how to study history the most efficiently so as to know all their skills and content while still leaving ample time in their schedule to study other subjects crucial for the As. This is especially important for H2 History as with poor study technique, the massive amount of content can quickly become a leech sucking up their study time.
- We will teach in accordance with the latest MOE syllabus using our acutely specialised techniques and expertise which are not available to parents at home.
- Students of H2 History likely already have some degree of interest in the subject. At Herzen we seek to tap on and expand this interest to aid in their conceptual understanding by engaging their intellect and exploring the areas of history they are already interested in to a deeper level, painting a more rounded photo of the subject as a whole.
